Workshop information and supply lists will be published
in Coastlines newsletter and posted here as they
become available. The
fee for one-day workshops is $40. Sign-ups
for each workshop begin two months prior and we expect these
excellent teachers to sell out fast. Workshops not filled
two months in advance will be opened to non-members for
an increased fee. Enroll by providing a check payable to
Coastal Quilter's Guild to the Workshop Chair. All
programs are subject to change.
Workshops are held from 9am - 3:30pm unless otherwise indicated.

This is a grand panorama of my development as an art quilter, starting with my Grandma’s quilt, my first blue ribbon quilt, and moving on through patchwork, story, portrait, landscape, abstract, and liturgical quilts. All of the quilts have their own story, and each one is completely different from the next.
Workshop January 12- GVCC
"Life's a Beach"
In this easy, fun, workshop, you will make a sandy beach in the morning, complete with shells and rocks and a ripple of water; then in the afternoon, you will make a crashing wave. In the process, you get to play with all kinds of fun STUFF - Puff Paint, sheer melted fabrics, fabric paints, Angelina fiber, Tintzl, melted painted cellophane and tiny beads. Come on to the Beach and Catch a Wave!

Workshop March 9
Introduction to Heat Set Applique
In this class you will learn to use an applique technique so new and revolutionary, you will use nothing else once you try it. It is easy, foolproof and the results are always amazing.
This technique leaves the quilt and the fabric soft and manageable, not stiff and board-like, as fusible webs and glues do. The best however, is that you can do raw edge applique without any fraying edges!! This technique produces a no-fray raw edge applique as a result.
You will pick from one of the patterns below for the workshop.

Through slides I show how I started, how I work now, and share a little bit about what I've learned and the obstacles I've encountered throughout my 20+ year creative journey. My intention is to encourage by example. I hope attendees will leave inspired - feeling that if I can do it they can too. I like to bring as many quilts as I can and am open to all questions.

"My Applique Journey"
Before I could ride a bike, my grandmother had me tatting lace and taught me how to sew. My love affair with quilts started at this same time in my life. I’ve found applique to be the most interesting aspect of quilt designs and will take you from some old methods that you may have never heard of all the way through 3 modern techniques that I use in my designs and patterns.

Orange Peel Pillow
I will be teaching a machine appliqué technique that will look like you did the appliqué by hand when you are finished with your project!
We will make this scrappy Orange Peel pillow using a foundation paper on the inside of your appliqué, that when soaked will change to a puffed fiber. Because your appliqué fabric will be pre-washed and shrunk and the rest of your fabric will not, this will pull your stitches into your base fabric making the stitches disappear!
I will have kits available for sale as well as the foundation paper to make the class easy to prepare for and easy to complete your project!

"A Desperate Housewife’s Quilt Journey"
This humorous presentation, showing dozens of Sue’s quilts, takes you through her development as a quilt maker in the two main quilt styles that Sue loves and is known for: Intricate Pieced Quilts and Machine Pieced Landscape--Pictorial Quilts. Emphasizing her more recent quilts, Sue discusses several quilts in detail: the importance of design, color, fabric choices, and quilting patterns. The lecture ends with several story quilts that are guaranteed to make you giggle.

Curved Paper Pieced Flying Geese

Students immediately move beyond the basic paper pieced geese by adding a dramatic twist to them and design a small quilt (18" x 24") with curved flying geese. Students will learn how to design, draw, measure, and sew the pattern in class. Sue will discuss in detail many of the options available for using curved flying geese as borders or central design elements. Sue shares many secret tricks to paper piecing. This class is fun! It will open up new horizons to curved paper foundation piecing.

September 13 - Quilt Show Week!
Norah McMeeking
This month’s speaker is our own (sometimes) Norah McMeeking, former Adult Ed teacher and author of 2 popular quilt design books. At our September meeting she’ll reprise “My Great British (Quilting) Adventure,” which launched her career as a state--wide quilting speaker.
Ten years later, Norah authored Bella Bella Quilts, a book based on Italian inlaid floors and began to teach nationally and internationally. Prior to that, she served in many guild positions, including stints as newsletter editor, program chair, president, and co-chair of the guild’s two juried shows at the SB Museum of Natural History. Norah taught Adult Education classes from 1991 until 2006. Ten years later, Norah authored Bella Bella Quilts, a book based on Italian inlaid floors and began to teach nationally and internationally. Prior to that, she served in many guild positions, including stints as newsletter editor, program chair, president, and co-chair of the guild’s two juried shows at the SB Museum of Natural History. October 11 - Irelle Beatie
"From 80s Hand Applique to Today's Modern Aesthetic"
You know Irelle as past president as well as past and current quilt show chair. She is a prolific quilter making quilts for family and friends and donating many of her quilts to charity. Irelle’s lecture and trunk show will take you through her journey as a quilter from hand applique in the 80’s to a more modern aesthetic today. Irelle loves to take workshops and classes to learn new techniques. Many of the quilts in her trunk show reflect the workshops she has taken and many quilts are her original designs.
Workshop October 12: Not so Twin Strips
Irelle will be teaching a workshop based on her published pattern, Not so Twin Strips. It is a simple strip pieced process where fabric selection is key to achieving the design you are after. With fabric choices and placement, you can achieve a plaid look or create an interesting neutral background for hand or machine applique. Pattern required.

Applique Stitch Lab - Tips, Tricks & Decorative Stitches for Machine Appliqué

Boost your appliqué IQ! Loaded with super-practical tips and tricks, this workshop is a great class for learning or brushing up on easy machine appliqué. While making the Splendor appliquéd wallhanging, students will learn a variety of different methods to prepare their shapes for raw-edge and turned-edge machine appliqué, as well as to perfect their own “unique appliqué stitch” during class. Along the way, you’ll also learn how to use a variety of fun decorative stitches to texturize their appliqués and gain the confidence you need to appliqué the day away! |
